Department: Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship

Preferred degree program:

  • Students currently enrolled in: Bachelor’s degree program
  • With a concentration or focus in: Health Science, Neuroscience, Pre-med program, or related field

Description of internship position:

The CIOS internship position provides opportunity for students to gain experience and knowledge in an integrative oncology setting. In addition to witnessing patient-provider interaction, the intern will have opportunities to assist with the development of patient education materials, data management and data trending (i.e. RedCaps, MS Access, MS Excel), research and screening patients, philanthropy, survivor programming as well as participation in meetings.

Interns with CIOS/Cancer Institute have the opportunity to be involved with:

Research study assistance with Research Coordinators and several different research projects involving input, maintenance, reports and support. Data analysis is integral to all of our research studies and often programs.

Participation in Cancer Support Community activities such as lung cancer support group, nutrition classes, music therapy, and more.

Participate in Upstate Cancer Network activities and meetings.

Develop patient education materials.

Skill development in speaking directly with patients and clinical professionals arises from shadowing and research assistance, attendance in interdepartmental meetings.

Various administrative duties also include: restocking patient exam rooms, assembling patient education materials, triaging patient folders, mail outs of monthly calendars, and other tasks as needed.The CIOS intern will have the opportuinty to develop skills related to Electronic Health Record (EHR) Navigation.The CIOS intern will have the opportunity to aid in survivorship programming.The CIOS intern will have the opportunity to develop research administration skills.

Learning outcomes:

The CIOS intern will demonstrate ability to navigate EHR systems.The CIOS intern will outline integrative programs and opportunities for the adult oncology population.The CIOS intern will demonstrate research study skills and abilities.The CIOS intern will successfully navigate EHR systems independently. The CIOS intern will effectively aid in the development and implementation of opportunities for the adult oncology population.The CIOS intern will construct an outline of necessary and developed research administration skills.
