Description of internship position:
Examination of the role of social factors (social class, race, ethnicity, inequality) in shaping health outcomes. Fundamental or root causes of disease as well as the structure vs. agency debate are explored. The impact of social policies on health is also examined.
In the Prisma Health Accountable Communities setting, student will be exposed to development and program management around community-based health that enables population health management. Student will have exposure to organizational operations, decision-making and the opportunity to participate in projects around Population Health Management and Community-Based Health. Opportunities include:
-Enrolling patients in the state mandated legislation Proviso 33.34 also known as the Healthy Outcomes Plan (HOP) and other programs/services.
-Assist with the work plan and implementation of the Accountable Community Health Clinics to include community, mobile, Covid, etc.
-Assist with the execution of community-based health events/services
-Support the implementation of the Neighborhood Health Partners (NHPs) Model
-Other projects as assigned
-Observing corporate staff during meetings
-Networking with various department leaders of interest.
Learning outcomes:
Student will be exposed to the macro and micro-level social policies impacting health outcomes. Students will acquire an understanding of how quantitative and qualitative data can be used to better understand social phenomena. Student will explore concept how structure shapes agency.
The student will gain practical experience in healthcare policy, practical experience in healthcare research and explore population health as potential career.
