Description of internship position:

The KIDNETICS Spartanburg outpatient clinic pre-therapy experience will immerse students into a pediatric rehabilitation setting where the they’ll obtain valuable insight from skilled professionals, acquire an understanding of the therapist’s role, and explore a variety of evaluations and treatment modalities. As students support licensed practitioners, students will have an opportunity to accumulate the hours often required for admission into therapy degree programs.

Availability for placements at KIDNETICS will vary and be determined on a case by case basis. Pre-Therapy students will have opportunities to observe treatment sessions and support clinical staff through various projects assigned in the following specialties:

Occupational Therapy:

KIDNETICS offers pediatric occupational therapy where the therapist works to maximize a child’s ability to perform developmentally or age appropriate activities of daily living, which include self-care, play and school skills. More specifically, the OT is concerned with functioning in the following areas: dressing, feeding, fine motor manipulation, tool use, i.e. pencil or scissors, and visual-motor/perception, i.e. puzzles and design copying. Therapy focuses on underlying deficit areas like trunk stability, upper body or hand strength, body awareness, motor planning, visual attention and discrimination, and coordination. Goal-directed activities are presented with the OT’s role being to first engage the child, then to assess their response and grade or adapt necessary components for success. Sometimes changes in strategies to approach the task are made, other times modifications to the environment are required, and splinting or special equipment may be considered. Progressively the challenge is increased until skills are mastered or a plateau in functional level has been achieved.

Physical Therapy:

KIDNETICS offers pediatric physical therapy for children with movement/ posture disorders and/or gross motor delays. The main focus of PT is to increase a child’s independence of age appropriate movement through space (rolling, crawling, walking, running), taking into consideration quality and function. Each child is evaluated and a treatment plan is formulated based on that child’s individual needs. Age appropriate play is used as the primary method of treatment delivery. Adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, standers, walkers, and crutches are sometimes a part of that treatment plan. To secure that equipment, collaboration with a medical equipment vendor is necessary. The PT’s work closely with certified orthotists when the children need braces or cranial molding bands. Progressively the challenge is increased until skills are mastered or a plateau in functional level has been achieved.

Speech-Language Therapy:

KIDNETICS’ speech language pathologists evaluate and treat children with a broad range of speech and communication disorders. Services are provided in a child-centered and child-initiated manner through individual and group intervention. Our therapists specialize in feeding disorders, oral motor dysfunction, dysphagia, apraxia, autism and other sensory based communication disorders, fluency disorders, voice disorders, social/pragmatics disorders, auditory and language processing disorders, augmentative communication, and articulation/phonological disorders including phonological processing disorders. Comprehensive evaluations are provided for each child in order to develop an individualized treatment plan. The therapists work closely with the parents to determine specific goals, the appropriate type of intervention and the primary focus of therapy. Specialty programs offered by Kidnetics speech pathologists include: Kidtalk and Motion, ABC University, Social/Pragmatics groups, Preschool language groups, and feeding teams. We work closely with the occupational and physical therapists to provide unique comprehensive services. The pre-therapy student will become familiar with the role of a Therapist within an interdisciplinary clinical care team.Through interacting with licensed professionals, students will become familiar with current professional licensure and certification requirements. The student will be exposed to rehabilitation theory and practice in a variety of rehabilitation settings
